Summer Fun at StageKidz 2010!
In our tenth summer season, we invite you and your children to learn about what wonderful theater can offer! Meeting five days a week from 9:00am-3:00pm (with pre and post camp care offered at an additional fee), our experienced counselors provide a happy and safe environment for your children.
How we're different from other camps
Our teachers LOVE what they do at camp. They are all college graduates and have degrees in their disciplines. They continually act in their free time, and have a passion for the performing arts.
We are an equal opportunity program and there are no student "stars"! Each student has an equal shot at the part of their choice.
Low student-teacher ratio: By having a strong experienced staff, we offer a great ratio of teachers to students (usually less than 10:1. For younger groups, it's less).
Building a strong non-competitive community is our priority. Sharing circles, trust activities, ensemble work and a sense of ritual accompany all the work we do and the students thrive on it!
StageKidz: (ages 8-16)
What we do
We offer three types of intensive summer programs. First we have a six week program, which culminates in a final production (August 11-13) of Suessical, Jr.Camp begins on July 5 and ends August 13.
Our three week program (begins on July 5 and ends on July 23) culminates in great Showcase on July 23, in which all three-weekers are featured.
Our third choice is for our youngest thespians - StageTeenies - one week camps meeting from 9:00am to 1:00pm Monday through Friday. There are six different sessions, and you can pick and choose which camp is right for your child:
Week of:
- July 5: Disney characters
- July 12: Superheroes
- July 19: Favorite TV Show Characters
- July 26: Dr. Seuss
- August 2: What I Want to Be
- August 9: Celebrations!
At StageKidz, we help create active stage presence by:
- Examining character motivation
- Using stage direction and blocking
- Enhancing the connection to the body
- Vocal technique: ear training and expanding vocal range
- Speech: articulation and projection
- Dance technique training
- Using emotional memory as a tool
- Taking creative risks
- Drawing the human figure
- Designing costumes for a play or scene
- Developing a set design
In all classes, every camper will receive a well-rounded education of techniques for auditioning, musical theater, character develop- ment, basic stagecraft, and dance. This all culminates in a great rehearsal process and fabulous show at the end of camp!
Students are split into groups based on age and theater experience. They learn from four experienced adult counselors who hold college degrees in the discipline they are teaching. During these educational settings, students learn about individual discipline, and participate in activities to hone their skills.
A typical StageKidz schedule:
- 9:00-9:30am: warm ups: vocal and physical
- 9:30-10:15am: Session 1 Acting
- 10:15-11:00am: Session 2 Music
- 11:00-11:45am: Dance
- 11:45-12:15pm: Lunch
- 12:15-1:00pm: Art
- 1:00-3:00pm: Rehearsal/blocking for Showcase or final production (This time will include additional music sessions or dance as well for the performance)
We follow the professional audition model where each student auditions independently for our creative directing team. Each student has an equal shot at the part of their choice. Furthermore, we do not cast students based on seniority with the camp. We are an equal opportunity program. We believe that the audition process sets the stage for the entire camp experience.
Our camp philosophy is more than just learning about theater. We are not building stars - we are building confident children. We strive to make sure they understand that the part they receive in a show is not the making of a great performer. We want them to appreciate all parts in a production. Each role is important, no matter how big or small. Another thing we strive to do at our renowned summer camp is to not only teach the students about the various aspects of theater, but also encourage them to apply what they have learned in performance. What results is a confident and strong camper, who has had a ton of theatrical fun along the way.
StageTeenies: (ages 4-7)
What we do
For our youngest theater lovers, we offer six one-week camps that focus on different themes. Try one, or try all! You can pick and choose. Themed weeks include: Princess week, Superhero week, Favorite TV show star (pick your own!), Dr. Seuss week, What I Want to Be when I Grow Up week, and Celebrations Week!
Each camp is led by an experienced adult teacher and one assistant. There is a limit of ten students per session. In these camps, students create their own scripts, sets, props, and cos- tumes. They also focus on acting, singing, and dancing (in shorter time spans). Each week ends with a great, original student show in which parents and friends can enjoy.
A typical Teenies schedule:
- 9:00-9:15am: Warm up (vocally and physically)
- 9:15-9:45am: Dance
- 9:45-10:15am: Journaling (about characters, possible plots for plays, etc.)
- 10:15-10:30am: Snack time
- 10:30-11:00am: Playwriting. Students will work on what their plays will be about (select characters, plots, etc.) all under the guidance of our teachers
- 11:00-11:20am: Music. Each play includes a song. Students learn the song in camp and practice it with choreography
- 11:20-11:45am: Lunch
- 11:45-12:15pm: Set design/props. Students will handcraft props, costume pieces, and set designs for their productions
- 12:15-1:00pm: Characterization, improv, play rehearsal
StageTeenies are housed in a separate building across the parking lot from the theater. This facility has its own bathrooms and is fully air conditioned.
