Based on the popular 2000 film, “High Fidelity” follows the adventures of Rob, a record store owner who knows almost everything there is to know about pop music, but almost nothing about how to keep a girl. Rob's love life, already a broken record of heartache, falls off the charts completely when he gets dumped by Laura. But that just sets him up for a romantic comeback as he reexamines his top 5 heartbreaks (with a little help from his music) in this high-energy musical opening October 4 at Haddonfield Plays & Players!
“The show is basically a romantic comedy told through the perspective of a man,” said director Ed Doyle.
“The music drew me in originally. I immediately connected with it and saw myself blocking scenes without even reading the script.”
The music in the show crosses genres, from pop music to rhythm and blues to romantic ballads, with each song in the style and musical vocabulary of a different musical artist. Numbers feature original songs in the style of music legends like Bruce Springsteen, Beastie Boys, Indigo Girls, Talking Heads, Aretha Franklin, The Who, Guns N' Roses, Billy Joel, George Harrison, Percy Sledge, and more.
The musical, which ran on Broadway in 2006, was hailed by the Associated Press ("High Fidelity's charms are considerable and don't be surprised if you fall under its spell") and Entertainment Weekly ("High Fidelity is the unique show that charms both your drinking buddy and your mother.")
“I feel like the message is to look at yourself before you blame others for your problems,” said Doyle, who promises the cast of talented performers will bring the laughs and the tears.
“Come prepared to laugh and cry and then laugh again!”
